I'm looking for recommendations for anime tv series or movies to watch. I don't actually own a television, so any suggestions should be things that are available online. (I'm not too worried about the legality of this availability, though.) I have most of the Studio Ghibli movies, and like the ones I've watched, though in most cases more for the scenery porn than the plot. (Howl's Moving Castle is actually a very good book, which they mangled beyond intelligibility for the movie.) I also just finished watching Death Note, which was really good in the beginning but mostly just annoying over the last third or so. Ryuk was cute, and I liked L, but I wanted to throw Misa out a fricking window, and not in a good way. I also liked the window into Japanese culture that it offered. I tend to have the memetic equivalent of an allergic reaction to anything girly, so that's out. I could maybe sit through Hamtaro, but that's about my limit. (It is both accurate and amusing to point out that I'm not secure enough in my masculinity to admit to watching My Little Pony, despite the fact that I generally identify as cis-female. ) I'm also likely to find anything with a strong focus on romantic relationships boring at best and annoying on average. So... suggestions?

What exactly are you looking for content and genre wise? "Nothing too girly" still leaves the field pretty damn broad.

At this point I'm mostly looking for 'best of'-type recommendations, such that my personal preferences aren't very important. Given that: I like fantasy, realistic fantasy (like Death Note and, to a lesser degree, HPatMOR - things set in this world rather than some completely fantastic one), and scifi, particularly where the exotic elements have fairly consistent rules that make sense. I generally don't like comedies, though there may be some exceptions to that one. I expect not to like war-themed things, though if the war aspect is the setting rather than the plot it might be okay. I don't see the appeal of giant mech suits, though that's not a reason to avoid a given story. I like things with long-term characters rather than throwaway characters. I don't like things with lots and lots of characters unless those characters are visually distinct and easy to keep track of. (There is some amount of evidence that my personal Dunbar's Number is something silly-low, like 30 or 40.) Character development is a good thing. I don't mind hammy acting but do find over-the-top emotional displays annoying. I can probably continue, but I don't know enough about anime (or mainstream media in general, actually) to know what else would be useful to specify.
